Coconut water is a drink worth understanding on its own terms. These five assumptions can make a simple beverage decision more confusing than it needs to be.
1. No added sugar means no sugar
Total sugars and added sugars are different entries on the Nutrition Facts label. Read both rather than interpreting the front of the package as the whole story.
2. It always hydrates better than water
One small exercise study does not establish that claim for everyone. See our water comparison for the research context.
3. More is always better
Portion size and individual restrictions still matter. There is no universal daily target that everyone should try to reach.
4. A nutrient list proves a treatment benefit
Ingredients do not establish that a drink treats illness. Do not replace prescribed care with beverage advice.
5. All products are interchangeable
Plain coconut water, flavored blends, coconut milk and cream of coconut are different products. Match the ingredient list to the drink or recipe you want to make. Our water-versus-milk guide explains the distinction.
