Coconut Water and Kidney Disease: Potassium Matters

Ways In Which Coconut Water Is Good For Kidneys

Coconut water is not a kidney cleanse or a treatment for kidney disease. We have removed the earlier list of claimed kidney benefits because it did not establish clinical evidence for those promises.

Why potassium matters

The National Kidney Foundation identifies coconut water as high in potassium and advises discussing it with a dietitian. A drink that fits one person’s eating pattern may not fit someone else’s kidney care plan.

Before adding it to your routine

Bring the product label to your kidney care team. Ask whether its potassium content and the amount you intend to drink fit your individual potassium and fluid limits. Do not change prescribed medicines or fluid restrictions based on a beverage article.

A different question: ordinary hydration

For the broader difference between hydration and kidney treatment, see our guide to coconut water and everyday hydration.
